Yellowing resistance grade of TPU elastic tape

Yellowing is an unavoidable problem of plastic products, no except of TPU elastic tape. Yellowing is a kind of phenomenun that the objects become yellow under natural sunlight and ultraviolet rays for a long time, or under the action of heat, oxygen, impurities, improper processes, etc. As we know, TPU tape is a kind of garment accessory made from TPU material. Different plastic materials own different yellowing resistance grades. At the same time, different types of TPU own different yellowing resistance grades as well. For example, when just considering yellowing resistant performance, polyether TPU material is better than polyester one. Besides, new TPU material is better than reclaimed material.

Generally, there are three main reasons result in yellowing when ignoring the impact of material itself. The first reason is the high temperature. The second one is the direct sunlight. And the third reason is the repeated processing. Therefore, reclaimed TPU material is much cheaper but owns worse physical performance. In addition, the oxygen and moisture can also affect the performance of TPU. For instance, oxygen will makes TPU tape yellowing while moisture will makes it sticky. So TPU tape must be packed in colorless plastic bags, and then sealed in carton if you want to store TPU tape for a long time.

There is an international standard about classification of resistance to yellowing. Grey chip comparison is the most popular way to measure yellowing resistance class. After Suntest, QUV or other solarization test, we can get the result. The best level is 5, which means TPU tape basically has no change in color under. Levels 4-5 represent slight discoloration. Significant discoloration will reach below level 3. If you need a completely unchanged TPU, you can generally choose an aliphatic TPU.
