Elastics for swimwear

Swimwear is subjected to some of the harshest conditions of any garment. The fabric stress factors that act on a swimsuit are relentless. Constant stretching when the suit is put on and taken off, tension from water resistance while swimming, and the pull of gravity when wet all work to elongate the material. Chlorine in pools, salt in seawater, and the chemicals in sunscreen and body oils attack the fibers and elastic components. Over time, these repeated stresses cause the fabric to relax, the seams to stretch, and the overall fit to become loose and saggy. A swimsuit that started the season fitting snugly can end it baggy and unsupportive.


Washing impact is another major contributor to shape loss. Even if a swimsuit is rinsed after each use, the combination of detergents, machine agitation, and spin cycles accelerates the breakdown of elastic fibers. Many swimsuits are made with spandex or elastane, which degrades when exposed to chlorine and heat. Washing machines can twist and pull the fabric unevenly, stretching leg openings and armholes. Tumble drying or leaving a wet suit in direct sunlight adds thermal stress, further weakening the material. After only a few dozen wash cycles, even a well‑made swimsuit can lose its original contours.




A crucial but often overlooked factor is the lack of reinforcement in key areas. Many swimsuits rely solely on the inherent stretch of the fabric itself, with no additional structural support. Shoulder seams, leg openings, waistbands, and underbust lines are subjected to the highest tension. Without a stabilizing element, these areas are the first to deform. The fabric stretches permanently, leading to gaping armholes, drooping necklines, and a waistband that no longer stays in place. This is especially problematic in one‑piece swimsuits and bikini bottoms, where a secure fit is essential for both comfort and modesty.


The solution to this persistent problem is surprisingly simple: incorporate TPU tape into the construction. TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) tape is a transparent, lightweight elastic that is particularly well‑suited for figure‑hugging, stretch fabrics. It provides reliable elastic support in areas that need shaping, such as the bust line and side seams of swimwear. The tape stretches with the fabric but recovers completely, pulling the garment back into shape every time. When applied to shoulder seams, leg bindings, and waistbands, TPU tape acts as an invisible reinforcement that dramatically extends the life of the swimsuit. However, it is important to note that because TPU tape is very thin, its stretch capacity is not as high as that of traditional rubber elastic. Therefore, it is not suitable for areas that require extreme elongation, such as the main waistband of a swimsuit. That said, there is an exception: many bikinis deliberately use crystal clear TPU tape for waistbands and back straps, taking advantage of its high transparency to create an invisible look, striking a balance between aesthetics and function. Overall, TPU tape does not curl, fray, or yellow over time, and it remains soft against the skin. Swimwear brands that use TPU tape in key shaping areas while avoiding zones that demand extreme stretch consistently report lower return rates and higher customer satisfaction. By addressing the underlying causes – fabric stress, washing damage, and lack of reinforcement – TPU tape offers a practical, durable solution that keeps swimwear fitting beautifully season after season.
