How to choose the right string cord for bracelets

When making bracelets, the choice of stringing thread may seem minor, but it directly affects the durability, aesthetics, and wearing experience of the final piece. Common types of stringing threads on the market include nylon thread, polyester thread, elastic thread (such as TPU crystal thread), and metal thread, each with its own characteristics suited to different crafting needs.  

Nylon thread is one of the most widely used stringing threads. It is soft, affordable, and suitable for beads with larger holes or lighter materials, such as wooden or acrylic beads. However, its drawbacks include susceptibility to yellowing and aging over time, especially with sweat exposure, as well as weak elasticity. After repeated bending, it may fray or break, making it more suitable for decorative bracelets that are not worn frequently.  

Polyester thread is more wear-resistant and has higher strength, making it ideal for pairing with metal accessories or heavier beads, such as crystals or jade. Due to its low elasticity, polyester thread often requires tools for beading, and knots may need to be secured with adhesive. However, it offers a wide range of color options and is less prone to fading, making it suitable for intricate designs that require strong support.  

Elastic thread has gained popularity in recent years, particularly TPU crystal thread. This type of thread is highly transparent, offers good rebound, and has some sweat resistance and anti-aging properties, making it ideal for bracelets that are worn directly without clasps. Its soft and elastic nature is especially suitable for beads with small holes or irregular shapes, such as freshwater pearls crushed stone beads. However, it is important to note that elastic thread has limited weight-bearing capacity and is not suitable for overly heavy or sharp-edged beads, as they may cut the thread.  

Metal thread, including copper-coated wire or silver wire, offers strong shaping capabilities and is suitable for beaded pieces that require structure or pairing with larger gemstone beads. Metal thread is less prone to breaking but has low flexibility. Prolonged wear may cause metal fatigue due to bending, and it may not be suitable for those with sensitive skin.  

When choosing a stringing thread, consider the material, hole size, and intended use of the beads:  

1. For beads with very small holes (e.g., less than 1mm), opt for highly elastic thin TPU thread or specialized micro-hole thread.  

2. For heavy or sharp-edged beads (e.g., cut crystals, metal beads), choose wear-resistant polyester or metal thread.  

3. If a completely invisible look is desired, transparent TPU thread or extremely fine nylon thread is recommended.  

4. For bracelets that require frequent length adjustments or regular wear, elastic thread or reinforced nylon thread are more practical choices.  

Additionally, regardless of the thread type, it is advisable to perform a simple tension test before use and regularly inspect and replace the thread to avoid bead loss due to aging. A suitable bracelet thread not only connects each bead but also weaves together craftsmanship and enduring beauty.
